Reviewing respiratory disease burden in rural India: household environment matters.
نویسنده
چکیده
Much of the disease burden in rural India is due to respiratory disorders, namely asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis (TB) and pneumonia. In low resource settings these diseases may be attributed to exposure to indoor pollution, solid-cooking fuels, poor housing, low nutritional status and poor sanitary conditions. The association of respiratory disorders with a geographical region may be due to population density, industrial and textile pollutants and tobacco consumption. The relationships of socio-economic development with behavioral and environmental factors of these diseases are predictable.

Air pollution from household solid fuel combustion in India: an overview of exposure and health related information to inform health research priorities
Environmental and occupational risk factors contribute to nearly 40% of the national burden of disease in India, with air pollution in the indoor and outdoor environment ranking amongst leading risk factors. It is now recognized that the health burden from air pollution exposures that primarily occur in the rural indoors, from pollutants released during the incomplete combustion of solid fuels ...

Introduction: Piped water systems are considered to be the gold standard for drinking water according to the Joint Water Monitoring Study. However, poor maintenance of distribution pipes, intermittency of water supply, and sewage water intrusion have contributed to a number of water-borne disease episodes in developed and developing countries. Methods: This study investigated the risk burden r...
متن کاملAddressing the Burden of Disease Attributable to Air Pollution in India: The Need to Integrate across Household and Ambient Air Pollution Exposures
In the comparative risk assessment (Lim et al. 2012), performed as part of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2010 Project, air pollution ranked as a leading contributor to the burden of disease in South Asia. Estimates of the burden in India show approximately 1.04 million premature deaths and 31.4 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) to be attributable to household air pollution (HA...
متن کاملState and national household concentrations of PM2.5 from solid cookfuel use: Results from measurements and modeling in India for estimation of the global burden of disease
BACKGROUND Previous global burden of disease (GBD) estimates for household air pollution (HAP) from solid cookfuel use were based on categorical indicators of exposure. Recent progress in GBD methodologies that use integrated-exposure-response (IER) curves for combustion particles required the development of models to quantitatively estimate average HAP levels experienced by large populations. ...
متن کاملAssessing Commitment and Reporting Fidelity to a Text Message-Based Participatory Surveillance in Rural Western Uganda
Syndromic surveillance, the collection of symptom data from individuals prior to or in the absence of diagnosis, is used throughout the developed world to provide rapid indications of outbreaks and unusual patterns of disease. However, the low cost of syndromic surveillance also makes it highly attractive for the developing world. We present a case study of electronic participatory syndromic su...
